TEACHER CERTIFICATION

The word Yoga means union. The practice of yoga uncovers the connection between body and mind, while profoundly transforming both. Practice of the yoga postures tones and regulates the body and teaches clarity and stability of mind. The prolonged practice of yoga leads a student not only to a sense of well-being but also a feeling of being at one with their environment.

WHAT IS IYENGAR YOGA?

Iyengar Yoga Teachers devise sequences of yoga poses, which build skill and understanding, from posture to posture, and from class to class. They use their deep-seated knowledge of the asanas and anatomy to individualise corrections for each student, including those with specific problems.

Students know they are observed and, if necessary, adjusted. Clear demonstrations of the yoga postures, keen observation skills, specific teaching points which awaken the body’s intelligence -- these are the marks of an Iyengar Yoga teacher.

Iyengar Yoga, based on the teachings of yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar, is rooted in the 2,500 year old classical yoga tradition of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Today, it is one of the world’s most widely practiced forms of yoga. The practice of Iyengar Yoga begins with physical awareness of the body. In each posture, every part of the body is acted upon with intent and precision. This precision builds strength and stamina, balance and flexibility and safeguards against injury. The practice goes beyond the physical being to embrace emotional and spiritual growth. The refinement of what might otherwise be purely mechanical movement with intelligent action, transforms the practice into a meditation in motion that illuminates the unconscious areas of the body and mind with the light of awareness.

The skillful use of equipment such as chairs, belts, blocks, etc. enables everyone regardless of age, strength, or flexibility to benefit from the practice. Each class ends with a period of deep relaxation when the student learns to rest in a profound way, completely releasing the body while drawing the mind inwards. As a student progresses, pranayama (control of the breath) is introduced.

Use of the certification mark indicates that an Iyengar Yoga teacher has completed at least three years of regular Iyengar yoga classes, two years teacher training and has successfully passed two or more rigorous assessments. Iyengar Yoga teachers are required to maintain their professional development each year to qualify for continued use of the mark.

The Iyengar Yoga Certification Mark is a guarantee of excellence, clarity and depth of understanding. All of the teachers listed on this website are certified in the Iyengar method and are fully insured.
